Summer Goal Digging

This 4-Week Group Health Coaching series will help you build health and wellness habits during this special time of the year. You’ll learn ways to spark and sustain motivation, even around disruptions and difficulties. Sessions are on 7/11, 7/25, 8/1 & 8/8 from 11:30am – 12:00pm.

Find A Market Near You

One of the best parts of summer is the weekly opportunity to walk around and buy fresh, locally grown produce. Make plans with friends or family to find an option nearby or try a new market in a neighboring community. Find a farm market to shop at the farm where the items were grown. Find a farmers market to shop in a local community where many growers come together to sell their goods. Find a pick your own to go to a field/orchard and pick your own produce.

Ice Cream & Iced Coffee: The Unofficial Treats Of Summer

Are you looking to satisfy a sweet tooth or get a jolt of caffeine? Grab a buddy and add a walk before, during, or after consuming to savor the moment. Check to see if any of these spots on the Ohio Ice Cream Trail are walkable for you. Can you walk to any of these java shops on the Columbus Coffee Trail, Delaware County Coffee Trail, or Champaign County Coffee Trail? A quick Google search may find a “trail” near you or an even better idea is to make your own trail!

Enjoy A Local Festival

Whether you are into food, music, art, or anything in between, Ohio probably has a festival for you! These are great ways to get in steps and indulge all of your senses. Even better yet, they are a great opportunity to socialize with family and friends. Check out this list of Festivals & Events from the official website of the State of Ohio.

Explore A Local Park

There are plenty of opportunities to get out in nature this summer with your crew. Columbus and Franklin County Metro Parks features 19 outstanding parks with more than 230 miles of trails in 7 Central Ohio counties. Across the state, Ohio has more than 5,000 miles of trails to bike, hike, run, walk, paddle, and ride. If exploring a green space with little ones, National Geographic has a great list of activities to try and a scavenger hunt can make any walk a little more interesting.

Get Outside & Have Fun

Tap into your inner child and let loose this summer! The State of Ohio put together a list of 100 Things To Do, making it easy to socialize and get active with your friends or family. Consider signing up for geocaching – the outdoor treasure hunting game that uses GPS to find hidden containers all over the world. Or you can try orienteering – the sport of navigation using a highly detailed map. Find a club near you to enhance your navigation skills.

Run/Walk A Local Summer Race

Although the temps are high, there are numerous race opportunities throughout Ohio this summer. From Firecracker 5Ks to Four On The 4th to Jingle In July 5Ks, everyone can find something to meet their fitness goals and be surrounded by others who are doing the same. Check out these races across the state to find an option nearby.

Have A Meaningful Connection

It can be really easy to fall into the pattern of talking about the same old topics. If walking with a colleague, pick a couple of questions off this list to get to know them better. With friends especially, your conversations may tend to center around current stressors, so use this list to start on a more cheerful note. Pick any of these one-line starters, general starters, or back to school starters to connect with the youngsters in your life while on a walk.

Attend Virtual Group Fitness Classes

Grab a co-worker and choose from a variety of live virtual classes including Zumba, yoga and more. These classes are brought to you by Buckeye Wellness and are regularly scheduled throughout the calendar year so you can continue participating after the challenge ends.

Plogging Through August

Team Walking Challenge  |  August 1 – 28, 2022
Pre-Registration Begins July 25, 2022

Log in to YP4H

Plogging is the simple act of picking up litter while you run, hike, or walk in your community. It started in Sweden around 2016 and the term is a merging of the Swedish verbs plocka upp (pick up) and jogga (jog). This gives the new Swedish verb plogga, from which the word plogging derives. Plogging started spreading to other countries around the world in 2018, following increased concern about plastic pollution. As a workout, it provides variation in body movements by adding bending, squatting, and stretching to the main action of running, hiking, or walking.
